RAYNERS LANE 4 EGHAM TOWN 2Sean Shields (2) David Lopes (2p)Callum Webb Bradley Bubb
Rayners third League game saw them come up against last seasons runners-up Egham Town. Having beaten Chalfont St Peter three-nil the previous weekend, The Sarnies have ambitions of going one place better this year. For the first twenty minutes or so the visitors took the game to their hosts, a marked difference to Rayners two previous opponents. Egham tried to push forward from the outset rather than sit back and this may well explain why Rayners seemed initially off the pace. For all their endeavour though, Egham failed to trouble Hafed Al-Droubi in the home goal and it was the home side who drew first blood when some good patient build up in the 23rd minute saw Kyel Reid work some space for himself down the left hand side and send in a cross that Bradley Bubb cushioned into the path of Sean Shields who was able to finish past Egham custodian Lewis Gallifent from close range. With Rayners passing game now in full flow it was no surprise when they increased their lead on 31 minutes when Rio Connell set up Callum Webb for a simple tap in. Two became three on 38 minutes when Sean Shields got his second of the evening with a solo effort, rifling the ball into the bottom left hand corner to give The Lane a comfortable half timelead. The second period saw the lively Webb hit the post on 56 minutes and the busy Bradley Bubb head just wide four minutes later. Bubb wasn’t to be denied for long as a twisting and turning run by Shields saw his inch perfect cross met full on by the forwards head. Rayners did think they had a fifth goal when Keano Robinson powerfully headed home a Sean Shields free kick, only to be denied by a linesman’s flag which, with the benefit of video replays, was proved to be incorrect. The shell shocked Sarnies were awarded a penalty on 84 minutes when a combination of Robinson and Folarin were penalised for a foul and David Lopes stroked past Al-Droubi who up until then hadn’t had to make a meaningful save all evening. Two minutes later he was picking the ball out of his net again following another Lopes converted penalty, awarded after Folarin had been adjudged to have taken his man down. The two late penalties gave the final score-line a closer look than it actually was but nonetheless the points were secured.
